Joydrop March 4, 1999 The Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto, ON

The fast-rising Toronto band Joydrop opened their Thursday night slot at the Horseshoe with "Fizz," the lead-off track from their debut CD Metasexual, and bottle-rocket lead singer Tara Slone popped a few corks in the audience over the course of the next 45 minutes (wink wink, nudge nudge). Though the diminutive siren's provocative demeanor and powerful voice are hard to ignore, her bandmates had no problem making their presence felt, with guitarist Thomas Payne showcasing his chops on "All Too Well," while bassist Tom McKay and drummer Tony Rabalao propelled the band ever forward. After a slight dip in momentum during the middle section of the set, they grabbed the crowd at the 'Shoe with the still-smokin' single "Beautiful" and ended strongly with a new song that, if it's indicative of the band's new material, should keep their momentum rolling into the future.
